Why I Created This ... And Why It Might Be Exactly What You Need

This gives you everything I’ve learned about what a songwriter needs to focus on to get signed to a publishing deal based on 25 years of actually signing some of the biggest songwriters in the business, and helping countless others land their very first deal.

My name is LeAnn Phelan, and for the last 25+ years, I’ve worked behind the scenes as a publishing, songwriter/producer manager, A&R, and Co-Head of Creative ASCAP Nashville helping songwriters develop into award winning pros.

When I first started in publishing, it wasn’t unusual to sign a writer with no cuts … just because you believed in them.

Having a heart for developing songwriters is something that has been the connecting thread throughout my career.

That’s how it began with Ashley Gorley...

11x ASCAP Songwriter of the Year and 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee.

That's also how it started with Jimmy Robbins, who has 10 #1 songs and multiple awards as a songwriter and producer.

I met both of these wildly talented people when they had some really good songs, incredible work ethic, and a great attitude! They were people I connected with and saw potential in.

I had the experience of a lifetime when both of these gentlemen reached the goal of their 1st number songs. The rest is literally history and they've gone on to do amazing things!

However, things changed during COVID. No shows. No in-person co-writes. No forward motion.

As Music Row came to a halt, my instinct was to offer free Zoom meetings to songwriters just to talk and mentor ... To keep their creative momentum going.

I thought of so many writers I’d worked with during my time as Co-Head of Creative ASCAP Nashville ... talented people who didn’t have a team ... and I wanted to be that team for them.

That turned into LP Creative Therapy: LIVE Workshops, 1-on-1 Sessions, and real talk about the business around songwriting and the mental challenges of this path.

Songwriters on the Rise eventually emerged as an excellent starting point for developing writers anywhere in the world to get a real look at how the music industry works and the tools you need to focus on to grow as a songwriter.

If you’re a songwriter with passion and a dream and you want to explore what it really takes to do this for a living ... I made this for you.

Just one of many Bluebird rounds with unsigned songwriters at the time... 4 people in this photo got record deals!

Because every week, I hear the same questions:

  • “What do publishers look for?”

  • “Is this a total waste of time if I don’t live in Nashville?”

  • “Am I even good enough?”

  • "How do I get my music heard by the right people?"

  • "How do I become a better co-writer?"

This course won’t promise you a deal. But it will give you the clearest, most honest overview I can share straight from my real world experience as a successful publisher, songwriter/producer manager, and A&R in this industry for 25+ years so you can stop wondering and start moving forward with more focus.

What’s expected of you, what's important to a music publisher when they are thinking about signing a new songwriter, what you should be looking for in publishing partner, how to prepare for a publishing meeting, how the pros prepare for co-writes, how you can prepare for co-writes, how to keep your mindset strong, and why it pays to write the next song and the one after that ... just like the PROS!
